PlayOn Launches Wii Beta

We are excited to announce that PlayOn officially supports the Nintendo Wii -- in Beta. That means the almost 25 million Wii owners can watch Hulu, Netflix, CBS, CNN, ESPN, Amazon VOD, YouTube, AdultSwim, Crackle and much more on their TV, from their couch, using their Wii Remote. Here is what it looks like:

This is the first device where we have control over the User Interface, and we have tried to make it as intuitive, user friendly and pretty as possible. You be the judge.

PlayOn for the Wii is available for a free, full-featured 14-day trial, and after that licenses are available for a one-time fee of $39.99. That same license (and the same software download) will support your PS3, Xbox 360 and other DLNA devices.

How it works: PlayOn uses the "Internet Channel" on the Wii - so if you don't have this, you will need to get it. After downloading and installing PlayOn on your PC, you then open the "Internet Channel" web browser on your Wii, press the "WWW" button and enter playon.tv as the web address. You should add this page to your Wii Browser "Favorites" to make it easy to access in the future. 

That's it! You can click on Hulu and find your favorite shows, or Netflix and watch that movie you have talking about seeing - right from your couch and Wiimote.

Wii support has been one of the most requested features from our users, and we are thrilled to offer this Beta release to folks who would like to give it a whirl.

PlayOn supports the broadest selection of Internet-to-TV premium content, including Hulu, Netflix, XBS, ESPN, CNN, Amazon VOD, and YouTube. And the selection of niche content is growing daily via the open PlayOn Plugin architecture, which currently includes:

I gave it a try, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed. Not to say it works flawlessly - ran into a few glitches here and there, but its definitely watchable. I tried TVersity on the Wii and it didn't work worth a darn (skips, etc). This is great!

It's true, the Nintendo is above-par in offering gamers almost true-like-life gaming platforms plus, the console's ability to connect with online video streaming sites makes Wii a very powerful contender against the top two bad boys of next-gen gaming: the PS3 and the XBox 360. The Wii was held into poor sales last year simply because its games were as dismal as winners from past "Golden Mullet" awards - simply put it that the Wii had a stinking resume of bad games and health-related issues but, it's all water under the bridge now.

Wii now has similar media player capabilities to the XBox 360 and PS3! This works great and you should trumpet this from the rooftops.
The only thing you might want to do is include a note on the Wii webpage for slower folk like me: "The Wii does not connect directly to the video source. You must have the PlayOn server installed and running on a PC on your network to provide a server for your device." :)

I set this up last night for our Wii. The first hurdle was connecting it to our network, which meant I had to add the Wii's MAC address to the wireless router's Allow list. Then I just had to surf to playon.tv, et voila! We were soon connecting to Hulu and watching a CURRENT "Heroes" episode!

Not to be a wet towel but I have so many issues with PlayOn working consistently that perhaps some time spent away from new features and on bug fixing would be good idea. I know bug fixing doesn't get in the new customers, but it does keep the current ones happy.

(Ever sense you recommended restarting the server every night to "fix" the memory leaks, I've had a bad opinion of the QA department at MediaMall. Things might have changed though.)
